Description

Students will learn how children grow and develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. There will be an emphasis on needs at any given age and stage and strategies on how these needs can best be met.

Practicum I - Observing and Recording

Practicum I - Observing and Recording

Description

Practicum One is designed to introduce the student to the practice of Early Childhood Education, with an emphasis on developing observation skills and developing the skills necessary to build relationships with young children. Students will build on their knowledge of child development and begin to develop a clear picture of quality care for young children. This practicum is comprised of five weeks or 225 hours. The first week (Part One) is an observation week where students read course material, observe five different child care settings and record specific observations. Part Two is comprised of four weeks in a licensed group child care facility for children aged 3-5. During this four-week period, students learn about the role of the early childhood educator and continue to sharpen observation skills. Student Responsibilities: - Make arrangements to visit five centres for week one, and find a centre to complete block practicum during Part Two - Attend half days in the first five facilities, and full days during the block practicum, and inform the centre if you need to be absent - Discuss observation assignments with centre supervisor - Support staff in routines, supervision and general housekeeping - Ensure criminal record check and doctor’s note are on file at the centre

Practicum II

Practicum II

Description

Practicum Two develops and expands on the knowledge and skills learned in Practicum One. Students complete 125 hours in a group licensed day care facility for children aged 3-5 over a three week period. Students are required to demonstrate their competencies in communicating with children, guiding children’s behaviour, and planning and implementing activities. They will do this through videotaping their activities and submitting a dvd to their Practicum Instructor for evaluation. Student Responsibilities: - Make arrangements with a child care centre to complete the three-week placement - Make arrangements for a video camera to demonstrate competencies, and ensure that parents are comfortable with the videotaping - Work full days in the child care centre and inform the staff if you need to be absent - Attend staff meetings when appropriate - Meet with centre supervisor to discuss activity plans and performance - Participate as a team member by supporting staff in routines, supervision, program planning and general housekeeping

Practicum III

Description

Practicum Three develops and expands on the knowledge and skills learned in Practicums One and Two. Students will spend three weeks in a group licensed day care facility and complete 125 hours. They will be required to demonstrate their competencies in planning and implementing activities, communicating with parents and staff and enriching children's play. These competencies will be demonstrated through video clips that will be submitted to the Practicum Instructor for evaluation. Students will become aware of the child as an integral part of his/her family and its cultural heritage. They will learn to appreciate and understand the uniqueness of each child and family.
